Great Research Essay Sample Sensory Adaptation Experiment Paper on Sensory Adaptation Experiment Sensory Adaptation experiments provide individuals with the experience of learning the changes in perception of messages sent to the nervous system and the response each message triggers from the brain. Every individual has senses, but not every individual uses those senses allowing the brain to process the messages (Sternberg, Mio Mio, 2009). The paper will discuss the results on the sensory adaptation of different experiments. The first experiment will involve rubbing my index fingers over the surface of coarse sandpaper and rating its coarseness on a scale of 1 to 7. The second experiment will involve two cups; one containing sugar water and the second containing fresh water. The third experiment will involve the use of three medium sized bowls and involves submerging my hands in the first two and simultaneously into the third one. Sensory Adaptation takes place when sensory receptors alter their sensitivity to stimuli. These experiments are to assess the results registered in th e sensory systems on different parts of the body. The first experiment involved rubbing my index fingers over a piece of coarse sandpaper. This experiment was carried out for a few minutes to rate the coarseness on a scale of one (soft) to seven (very coarse). After about two minutes had elapsed, I rubbed my index fingers over the same sandpaper and recorded the coarseness on the scale. The results registered in this experiment showed that an individuals perception of coarseness does change. The first time I rubbed my fingers on the sandpaper, the perception rating I registered was a six, which was very coarse. The second time I rubbed my fingers on the coarse sandpaper after about two minutes, I registered a rating of three which was less coarse than the first time. What was the significance of these results? I adapted to the feeling of the paper. The feeling on my fingers and the surface on the sandpaper were the same. I adapted to the sensation of coarseness, and after the second time round, I did not notice the difference betwee n soft and course as registered in the first trial. The second experiment involved setting up one cup with a sugar solution and the second cup with fresh water. I carried out the experiment by taking a sip of sugar water, swished it around my mouth for several seconds. After a certain amount of time had elapsed, I disposed of the sugar water. The results I registered showed that the taste in my mouth became less and less sweet as time lapsed. The reason for this was that the sensory nerves in my mouth become used to, or rather, adapted to the sweet taste. The second part of the experiment was to sip the fresh water and dispose of it. The taste of this water felt very different in my mouth. The reason for this was that the sensory nerves in my mouth adapted to the sweet tasting water. When I introduced the fresh water, the senses experienced a different taste. The final experiment involved the use of three medium sized bowls. The first bowl contained very hot water, but not painfully hot. The second bowl contained very cold tap water. The third one contained a mixture of very cold and hot water. The bowls were set up so that the cold-water bowl was in front of my right hand, and the hot water bowl was in front of my left hand. The lukewarm bowl was in between the two. The experiment involved submerging each hand in the bowl in front of the respective arms. This continued for about three minutes. Once the time elapsed, I took my hands from the bowls and placed them in the third bowl. The results registered were not very noticeably different. The reason my hands were not receptive was that they adapted to the water I initially put them. When I placed my hands in the lukewarm bowl, there was a less conspicuous difference to the senses. The primary sensory system involved in the first experiment was the sense of touch. The second experiment tested the sense of taste while the third experiment tested my sense of touch as well. Each of these systems experienced adaptations to the stimulus presented to me. Adaptation is an important factor in evolution. According to Nicholas (2009), the primary reason for its significance is the need for man to adjust to changes in their senses, environment and stimuli. If an individual is not able to adapt, he experiences difficult circumstances in handling even the smallest variance in his environment. If an individual is not able to handle the change or adapt to the change, this will create complexities not only in the sensory system, but also in the psychological system as well (Noback, C. R. et al, 2007). Additionally, lack of adaptation to certain situations may lead to the development of mental stress and disruption of the central nervous system. When an individual is able to ad apt to certain situations, he or she is able to evolve both in the mental and physical capacity.

If the scholarship is focusing on academic achievement, then a statement of high ranking from an established teacher could go a long way. Stating that the student is one of the top three you've taught in twenty years or the best student in her class suggests that she's an outstanding applicant who will likely continue to excel in college. Since most scholarships are awarded for students going into certain fields, you should speak about your vision of the student at college. If the scholarship is awarded to someone going into mechanical engineering, then you can corroborate the student's academic and professional goals and paint a picture of what you see her accomplishing in the field. Talk about her aptitude for the subject, involvement in Robotics Club, and excitement to study with renowned engineer Professor Smith at college. Ultimately, you want to make the student stand out as a motivated individual that the scholarship donors would want to invest in. You may emphasize her unique commitment, talent, drive, and passion, and show them how her contributions in high school predict her continued pursuits in college. Show them that she deserves the scholarship and that you have no doubt she will put it to good use. Your Contact Information In the end of your letter, you can give your contact information and invite the scholarship committee to get in touch with any further questions. If you've provided a complete, glowing picture of the student, then they should have all the information they need. On the other hand, your letter may fall short if it includes some of the following elements. Neither your coffee nor your recommendation letter should be lukewarm. What Not to Include in Your Scholarship Recommendation Letter It's unlikely that any recommendation letter will be explicitly bad. If you didn't get along with a student for some reason, then presumably she wouldn't ask you to recommend her. Even if she mysteriously did, you'd most likely decline or suggest someone who would be a better choice for recommender. However, recommendation letters can still end up being mediocre and not very helpful compared to others that rave about a student. Lukewarm Praise Letters that come off as lukewarm stand in stark contrast to enthusiastic ones. To avoid this, make sure to be intentional with your word choice and to avoid cliches. Talking about how a student is hard-working and a good student might not stack up well beside descriptors like diligent, insightful, intellectually curious, or compassionate, to name a few. Try not to use vague or overused adjectives that sound generic and lack impact. Additionally, a mediocre ranking like "above average" doesn't do much to help a student, especially if the scholarship is looking for exceptional academic merit. You also want to avoid covering every grade, club, or activity associated with the student, as this lacks focus. It wouldn't zero in on the specific qualifications the scholarship committee is looking for, and thus wouldn't help prove that the student deserves their time and money. Non-Descriptive Reasons Why the Student Deserves the Scholarship You also want to avoid simply listing adjectives in your recommendation without having the stories to back them up. Just as a picture is worth a thousand words, a story about your student is more memorable and telling than using an adjective with no example. In addition to calling Roger a caring, sensitive, and proactive leader, talk about how he developed a week of programming at school to raise awareness of mental health issues. Simply put, avoid abstract language if you can't support it with real examples. Generic Writing Finally, to reiterate the point, the least effective recommendation letter is one not tailored to the scholarship itself. While you may use the same letter of recommendation for more than one college a student is applying to, you should make sure to customize your letter for scholarships. They tend to be both competitive and specific. Therefore a student needs a strong, customized letter that talks about why she's the perfect person to win that money. Sample Recommendation Letter for a Scholarship Now that you know all the partsyour letter should include, here's an sample scholarship recommendation letter so you can see how it looks all tied together. Stereotyping a Stereotype Essay Junot Diazââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"How to Date a Browngirl, Blackgirl, Whitegirl, or Halfieâ⬠seems to play into and highlight the racial stereotypes that affect the way Americans see each other; however, Diaz is in fact working to show that even people who believe they understand the full extent of stereotypes, especially men, find themselves subordinate to the ones they are stereotyping. In this story, Diaz shows how female stereotypes actually control the actions of a males seeking intimacy. The man will revert to basic instinct and base his decisions on a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person. The short story focuses its instruction on the ultimate goal of reaching physical intimacy with a girl, but illustrates the definitely different courses of action necessary to take depending on what ethnicity the target girl is. This is where Diaz proves that even by mastering the ââ¬Å"predictedâ⬠behavior of females through racial stereotypes, the male while appearing to have control of the situation is actually lower than the female. The text has an almost aggressive tone is used to show that the author clearly knows what he is talking about in terms of girls. This tone adds serious credibility to the author and makes the instruction all the more believable. Instead of using phrases such as ââ¬Å"I would recommend,â⬠ââ¬Å"I think,â⬠or ââ¬Å"I believe,â⬠Diaz uses the imperative and says ââ¬Å"Clear the government cheese from the refrigerator,â⬠ââ¬Å"Leave yourself a reminder to get it out,â⬠and, ââ¬Å"Hide the pictures of yourself with an Afroâ⬠(Diaz 143). This forceful use of language is more believable and it creates a sense of power, superiority, and confidence in the reader because he is apparently taking instruction from an expert. After all, the reader using these instructions is looking to maximize his chances of getting anything from a ââ¬Å"Kiss,â⬠to a ââ¬Å"Girl just [giving] it up right thenâ⬠(Diaz 147). Diaz first points out that the reader should be aware of his own social class and ethnicity. The last thing the reader wants to do is foil his chances of achieving intimacy with his date by ignoring potentially embarrassing pictures or icons of a lower social class that would not impress the girl. Such things as the notorious ââ¬Å"Government cheeseâ⬠or the ââ¬Å"basket with all the crapped-on toilet paperâ⬠definitely want to be hidden away (Diaz 143, 144). By doing these small things, the reader is putting himself at an advantage by leaving no room for the date to find weakness in him. If the date cannot find anything embarrassing, the reader is in control of the situation. According to Casey S. Torstenson in her article ââ¬Å"You Donââ¬â¢t Know Me,â⬠she says ââ¬Å"To follow the advice of this story will, in all likelihood, get the [reader] closer to some form of physical intimacy, but this intimacy will be the result of a carefully manipulatedâ⬠¦ impression he creates for his date, rather than the more inherent and objective truths of who he truly isâ⬠(Torstenson). This statement means that by hiding anything potentially incriminating, the male has a better shot at getting intimate with the girl, but that he is defying the age old saying that every set of parents say to their kids, ââ¬Å"Just be yourself. â⬠Diaz proves my argument in this section because the reader, although seemingly in control of the situation, is forced to manipulate it in a way that is pleasing to the girl, not to him. Diaz does not suggest anywhere in the text that the reader should do what he might find appealing, instead, the only positive thing in the text for the reader is the ultimate possibility of a hook-up. If the reader manipulates a situation based on stereotypes (ie where to take the girl to dinner depends on what the color of her skin is) he is subordinate to the girl because he has to play his cards just right in order to get what he wants. The date is in complete control because every decision the reader makes is based on what the girl will do, not what the reader wants. In doing so ââ¬Å"Diaz emphasizes the way in which the social forces of race and class undercut both individuality and objectivityâ⬠and make the reader subordinate to his date (Torstenson). After the reader establishes his own security, it is then his responsibility to prepare for the evening. Diaz establishes that the first thing to do, no matter the race of the girl is to say hello to the mother. Once again, the author instructs the reader to inadvertently give up control. The entire purpose of saying hello to the mother is to impress her and to come across as a gentleman. Saying hello does not benefit the reader at all nor does it make his chances of getting with the girl any better. He merely says hello to come across as somebody he is not, boosting his facade, tearing down his true character, and once again putting the date in power. After the introduction is over, the reader must take the girl to dinner. This part of the story is intriguing because depending on what race the girl is determines where there is to go. The local girls (Hispanic and black) can be taken to El Cibao, only so that the reader can impress them with his Spanish or give them the chance to correct his Spanish. For some reason, the black girl and the brown girl are entitled to eat at a nicer dining establishment than the white girls who are suppsoed to be taken to Wendyââ¬â¢s. Diaz claims that the black girl will be impressed by his ability to speak Spanish, or the brown girl will have the opportunity to correct his ââ¬Å"busted-up Spanishâ⬠(Diaz 145). In the case of the black girl, she, although being taken to dinner, is in control of the situation because the only reason the reader takes her to dinner at a nicer place is in hopes that he can impress her. The reader letââ¬â¢s the stereotype that she does not speak Spanish control his decision making insomuch as that he is not at the restaurant to enjoy a meal, but only to get one step closer to intimacy. In the case of the brown girl, he hopes that she will correct him to make her feel important and smart. In this case, the reader is supposed to make himself come across as unintelligent to make the girl happy. Once again, the reader is subordinate to the girl because he is not being himself and is forced to act in certain ways that are uncharacteristic of him. However, suppose the girl does not speak Spanish. What is the reader supposed to do then? He is not being himself and following instructions, so if the instructions are not correct, the reader will be unknowing of his next move. The reader becomes dependent on these stereotypes and completely relies on them to work. The reader is at the will of the stereotypes. If they turn out to be false, then the reader will be lost with no direction and all of his expectations will be shattered leaving him in less control than he already is. In the case of the white girl, he expects that the white girl will put out much sooner than the girls of color and will not require the type of attention and time that the colored girls apparently deserve. What if the stereotype is false again? The white girl will be unimpressed by eating at a greasy fast food restaurant, and the reader will not get what he wants. As in every other instance, the reader relies on the validity of the stereotype. If it is true, then everything works out according to plan, but the only way for the stereotype to be true is if the white girl does absolutely everything according to Diazââ¬â¢s chronology of events. Diaz leaves no room for spontaneity. Everything is scripted. However, the script is only as long as the girl wants it to be. She is fully capable of doing what she wants. The girl is in complete control of the very stereotype that the reader relies so heavily upon. Thus, the reader is subordinate to his date. Flattery is his next tool. Once the dinner is over, Diaz tells the reader to act interested in the girl and touch her gently; almost in a suggestive manner. He tells the readers to say things like ââ¬Å"I like you,â⬠and ââ¬Å"[I] love [your] hairâ⬠(Diaz 147, 148). The basic assumption here is that girls will appreciate being complimented and be more willing to act more intimate with their charmer. However, even still, the girl is in complete control of her actions. Although the reader is wooing her, in the end it will be her decision whether or not she decides to put out. No stereotype can predict that event. They can offer a glimpse into a surface personality, but a sequence of events over the course of a couple of hours cannot physically be predicted exactly. Even so, the male will rely on a shallow concept that offers a glimpse into the future if he feels that it has the possibility of yielding pleasurable results. With this thought, it is clear that the stereotypes used in the story are geared towards pointing out how the potential for intimacy will make men revert to relying upon stereotypes and that they are not actually in control, but the stereotype that is controlled by the woman is in charge. ââ¬Å"How to Date a Browngirl, Blackgirl, Whitegirl, or Halfieâ⬠was most certainly written with the intent of showing how the male race relies on stereotypes to court women and how these stereotypes give the man a sense of security, control, and confidence. ââ¬Å"Diaz consciously [provides] stereotypical male figures for dramatic effectâ⬠in order to illustrate how, ââ¬Å"boys discuss members of the opposite sex as creatures to be used as devices for sexual gratificationâ⬠(Alford). However, the underlying message in the text is that men rely on these stereotypes so much, that they in fact lose control of the situation because it is not the man in control but the stereotype. While Diaz points out the presence of stereotypes amongst women of different races, he clearly wants to point out the truth that men stereotyping is a stereotype. Paths Of Life :: essays research papers
The only way to know for sure if a path is right for you is to take and follow the path all the way to the end. Unfortunately life can only allow so many misdirection plays and crossing of paths. There are many paths to choose from and every decision everyday of oneââ¬â¢s life can lead further down a path or force you to back up. Many people believe in one path and stick with it while others try to follow every path they get a hint of. Only one person can make this decision of a single or multiple path life and that person is you. There are many paths, but in specific four distinct groups. Every event in life can be placed on one of these four paths. à à à à à The first major path in life is most closely related to the American Dream. This path takes one through a normal life. As the old American dream clichà © goes one grows up in a family with two stable parents and one other sibling. They go through their school years doing every activity from the second grade play to the senior prom. They eventually go through a four-year college and end up marrying a woman who has had a similar existence. Both work for a job they particularly like and wind up having two children, one boy, one girl and living in suburban America. They have a three-bedroom house, two cares and a wonderful bunch of neighbors. Their children will eventually follow in the same path. This path is the middle of the road path and either has a step up or a step down. à à à à à A step down from the American dream path would be the underachiever path. This starts with a person growing up in a somewhat dysfunctional family and winds up hating their early life. This path leads to a bad school experience and a state of anti-social behavior where the person misses every activity from the second grade play to the senior prom. This person will decide not to struggle through college and joins the work force out of high school. This person has no real life and completely hates their job. This person suffers though life in many different areas, which include socially, financially, and emotionally. They will wind up not having a family and will finish their life alone and sad. Thankfully there is always a step up from that crappy old American dream clichà ©.

Ida Jean Orlando Nursing Theory Essay
Ida Jean Orlando, an American of Italian descent was born in 1926. She received her nursing diploma from New York Medical College, Lower Fifth Avenue Hospital, School of Nursing, her BS in nursing from St. Johnââ¬â¢s University, Brooklyn, NY, and her MA in mental health nursing from Teachers College, Columbia University, New York. Orlando was an Associate Professor at Yale School of Nursing where she was Director of the Graduate Program in Mental Health Psychiatric Nursing. While at Yale she was project investigator of a National Institute of Mental Health grant entitled: Integration of Mental Health Concepts in a Basic Nursing Curriculum. It was from this research that Orlando developed her concept which was published in her 1961 book, The Dynamic Nurse-Patient Relationship. She furthered the development of her theoretical concept when at McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA as Director of a Research Project: Two Systems of Nursing in a Psychiatric Hospital. The results of this research are contained in her 1972 book titled: The Discipline and Teaching of Nursing System. Orlando held various positions in the Boston area, was a board member of Harvard Community Health Plan, and served as both a national and worldwide consultant. She is a frequent lecturer and conducted numerous seminars on nursing mechanisms. Orlandoââ¬â¢s theory was developed in the late 1950s from observations she recorded between a nurse and patient. Despite her efforts, she was only able to categorize the records as ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠or ââ¬Å"badâ⬠nursing. It then dawned on her that both the formulations for ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠and ââ¬Å"badâ⬠nursing were contained in the records. The role of the nurse is to find out and meet the patientââ¬â¢s immediate need for help. From these observations she formulated the deliberative nursing process. The Metaparadigm Concepts include: Human/Person ââ¬â An individual in need Health ââ¬â No restricted definition Society/Environment ââ¬â No restricted definition Nursing ââ¬â A distinctive profession ââ¬Å"Providing direct assistance to individuals in whatever setting they are found for he purpose of avoiding, relieving, diminishing, or curing the individualââ¬â¢s sense of helplessnessâ⬠The patientââ¬â¢s presenting behavior may be a plea for help, however, the help needed may not be what it shows to be. Therefore, nurses need to use their perception, thoughts about the perception, or the feeling engendered from their perceptions to explore with patients the meaning of their behavior. This process helps the nurse find out the nature of the distress and what help the patient requirements. Orlandoââ¬â¢s theory remains one the of the most effective practice theories available. The use of her theory helps keeps the nurseââ¬â¢s focus on the patient. The strength of the theory is that it is clear, concise, and easier to use. While providing the overall framework for nursing, the use of her theory does not exclude nurses from making use of other theories while caring for the patient. When using Orlandoââ¬â¢s theory, the nurse identifies her own perceptions, thoughts, and feelings about the patientââ¬â¢s behaviors, then confirms them with the patient. She then formulates deliberative nursing actions to meet direct patient needs. As a final step, the nurse verifies whether or not she met the patientââ¬â¢s needs and decreased his distress, and determines if further action is required. The theory merges competent nursing practice and customer satisfaction. A question such as how can one be helped? This clarifies the nurseââ¬â¢s assumptions about patient needs and minimizes resource maltreatment. The nurse concentrates on relieving patient distress. Interventions address the patientââ¬â¢s requirements from the patientââ¬â¢s perspective. Orlandoââ¬â¢s patient-focused theory gives nurses a lucid, consistent approach. Itââ¬â¢s interpersonal, straightforward, and applicable to both simple and complex situations. Nurses can apply the theory independently or as an entire department. When nurse leaders initiate the theoryââ¬â¢s use in their departments, nurses are given a tool to satisfy patients and themselves. This, in turn, satisfies organizational and staff by providing retention goals. Because nurses can use the method even with time, energy, and financial constraints, they can minimize frustration associated with ââ¬Å"doing more with less. â⬠Also, nurses feel rewarded when they can rediscover their unique contribution to patient care-meeting the patientââ¬â¢s immediate needs. Cost-effective interventions like using this theory add value to nursing assistance at a time when itââ¬â¢s difficult to increase time with patients. Nurses can maximize their time, creating ââ¬Å"magic momentsâ⬠with patients and providing the best intercession. They can meet immediate patient needs, reduce patient distress, and feel empowered and contended. In all, these concepts by Orlando form the basis for providing nurses an opportunity to understand their relationship with their patients in a better way, so as to give patient care a new and whole hearted meaning.

Goals After Graduation
It's a day to look back and acknowledge the success throughout the year's. Graduation and receiving your diploma is the key to success. Graduates should have a goal in mind of what they want to do with their future. My goal for when I graduate is, to continue my education through college and earn my degree as a medical assistant. The Medical assistant field is always high in demand. And It's one of the top paying field's.I think In order for you to enjoy work you have to find something you are comfortable doing. When setting a goal you have to keep In mind that you have to try to do whatever Is In your hands to achieve that goal. Earning my degree to become a Medical assistant Is my goal because I love helping others. And the fact well paying field Is a plus. Being that I have 5 children and I want the bets for them. I would love to be able to help my husband provide for our children's dally needs.And I know with the help and support of my husband and children I will be able to achie ve my goal of finishing college and earning my degree as a Medical assistant. I know that reaching my goal of earning my degree will take lots of patience and perseverance from my part. But hey nobody said it would be easel Setting goals for after graduating is very important so you can have an I idea of what you want to do with your future. Graduating is already an achieved goal that we all set when we first enter grade school.And that is one of life's most important goal, graduating high school. In conclusion, making goals for after graduating is very important because it helps you have a better planned future. Goals are hard to achieve but are very important in life. Invention of the Push Pin The push pin was invented and patented in 1900 by Edwin Moore, in Newark, New Jersey. Moore founded the Moore Push-Pin Company with only $112.60. He rented a room and devoted each afternoon and evening to making push pins, an invention he described as a pin with a handle. In his original patent application, Moore described push pins as pins whose body portion can be firmly held by the operator when inserting the device, all liability of the operators fingers slipping and tearing or marring the film being removed. In the mornings, he sold what he had made the night before. His first sale was one gross (a dozen dozens) of push-pins for $2.00. The next memorable order was for $75.00, and his first major sale was for $1,000 worth of push pins, to the Eastman Kodak Company. Moore made his push pins from glass and steel.Ã Today push pins, also known as thumbtacks or drawing pins, are used widely in offices across the word. Moore Push-Pin Company As soon as he was well established, Edwin Moore began advertising. In 1903, his first national advertisement appeared in The Ladies Home Journal at a cost of $168.00. The company continued to grow and was incorporated on July 19, 1904, as the Moore Push-Pin Company. Over the next few years, Edwin Moore invented and patented many other items, such as picture hangers and map tacks. From 1912 through 1977, the Moore Push-Pin Company was located on Berkeley Street in Germantown, Philadelphia. Today, the Moore Push-Pin Company occupies a large, well-equipped plant in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia. The business is still exclusively devoted to the manufacturing and packaging of little things.
